In May 2026 an important, unprecedented event took place in Fort Carson, Colorado: US Army Operation Jailbreak . For the first time, roughly 600 participants from more than 50 companies came together in person to integrate their sensors and systems into a common Command and Control (C2) platform, exposing and documenting APIs across more than 70 Army capabilities, including the Integrated Battle Command System Maneuver (IBCS-M) program. This ambitious effort was created to address the urgent and growing need for US and allied forces to communicate with greater ease, share information at speed, and give leaders the comprehensive battlefield visibility required for decision advantage.

The "right to integrate" hackathon made clear that open collaboration is essential to keeping pace with today's operational demands, and that open, documented interfaces are the path forward. Operation Jailbreak was a structured interoperability sprint pairing the Army with defense contractors. The intent was to break down walls between disparate military platforms — from sensors to C2 nodes — and enable real-time data exchange across systems that were never designed to communicate. Participants were asked to prove that a system, whether a radar, electro-optical camera, or acoustic sensor, could integrate with IBCS-M through a published, documented interface.

The goal was simply "integration," but that was the only thing about it that was simple. For nearly a month, engineers developed, iterated, and tested their APIs until each interface met the Army's integration standards. By the end of the sprint, participants had validated open interfaces across multiple Army systems, opened previously closed platforms, and demonstrated tools that let teams expose and connect new interfaces rapidly. Tha
